Two trilogies filmed a decade apart, and the second one is the prequel. The Hobbit is the lighter, smaller story and comes first on the calendar of Middle-earth; The Lord of the Rings is what that story eventually costs. Either way round works here, which is rarer than it sounds — the prequels give nothing away, so this is a genuine choice between the tone you want to start on rather than a trap.
