For four films this was a series you could watch in any order, each handed to a different director with a different idea of what it was. From the fifth onwards it grows a memory: the same villains, the same debts, and a running argument about what one man is worth that the last two films resolve directly. Release order is the only order, but the first four are genuinely optional in a way the last four are not.
