The four original films are one continuous story told in order. The prequel, made eight years later, goes back sixty-four years to a young Coriolanus Snow and asks how the man giving orders in the first film got there. It works far better afterwards than before — the point of it is watching someone you already despise be briefly, genuinely sympathetic, and that only lands if you have met him as president first.
